A change of plans

As it turns out I am not a big fan of the scary-book genre. Of course I should have known this beforehand but I wanted to keep an open mind. This did not work out. I have read through half the book and will now stop. Now, the book is not a bad one. It is well written and it has got interesting characters but its metaphysical elements does not suit my taste. Therefore I am hereby deciding not to finish the book. Which is something i usually do not like to do. But I will stand by my decision.

I was browsing through an outdoor market the other day and found myself purchasing two new books. Seinlanguage by Jerry Seinfeld and Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. I have read a few chapters of Seinlanguage, and being a major Seinfeld fan, I have greatly enjoyed the book. Tomorrow I will start reading Wuthering Heights which I much look forward to. I really appreciated the book Jane Eyre written by Emily's older sister Charlotte. And my understanding is that Emily uses much of the same style of writing as Charlotte, which I am very fond of.

This brings to my mind the fact that I cannot help but being always swept away and finding myself admiring the old british culture with its Lords and Count's, sofisticated ladies and tea times. The aristocrasy and upper class of England seem to me one very interesting environment to have been in, back in the days. I also admire the amount of value they put in the intellectual side of things. To be well read and knowledgeable was something to strive towards and it was very positive. The downside however was the elitism and snobbism this lead and leads too, which is unfortunate. I, as always, would wish for a balance in between. A more diplomatic approach you may say.

Sepulchre

Always when I begin reading a book I struggle to keep my mind from wandering. It does not seem to matter if the beginning of the book is extremely well written and interesting, I still cannot stay focused. This would be easily explained if I did not like to read or did not wish to, but I want to read, I love to read, yet I cannot bring myself to constrain my thoughts for the opening pages of a book.
But once I have read a few pages and gathered my thoughts I can stay very focused and fixed on the book at hand. But I do not like missing a part of the book. It does not matter if the beginning would be of no importance to the rest of the book. It is about the principle. One do not only listen to the chorus of a musical piece, one listens to the whole piece. The very first sentences are of the same substance as the very last ones. Therefore it is a shame that I have this much disturbing quality. Before i start reading the next book I will make sure that I am extremely focused and have nothing else on my mind.

However this little experiment will have to wait until I finish my current book, Sepulchre written by Kate Moss. It seems to be a somewhat scary story that takes place in France during the end of the 19th century as well as current times. It has a very skillfully written parallel story both with a young woman as its lead character. I have yet to experience how the story develops but it seems promising. It is quite exciting as this is a category in which I very rarely read books.
I will keep this blog posted on any updates.
